Oxford, MS: Yoknapatawpha Press (pub: November 15, 2019)
In 1978 Yoknapatawpha Press published William Faulkner: The Cofield Collection, by Jack Cofield, a photo-biography of William Faulkner featuring portraits by family photographers J. R. Cofield and his son Jack, and historical photos by other photographers. School yearbook pictures, family snapshots, and news photographs trace the author’s life and work. “These photographs,” observed Eudora Welty, “eloquently tell us what no voice now can tell, what no words are likely to express so clearly and intimately about William Faulkner’s life. His readers must always be grateful for this valuable storehouse of living record.”
Now The Cofield Collection has been re-issued as a coffee-table paperback: 302 photos, 212 pages
LAWRENCE WELLS edited the photo-biography, William Faulkner: The Cofield Collection. He and his late wife Dean Faulkner Wells, niece of William Faulkner, owned Yoknapatawpha Press. Wells co-founded The Faulkner Newsletter and Yoknapatawpha Review, a quarterly literary journal, wrote two historical novels, Rommel and the Rebel and Let the Band Play Dixie, scripted a Mississippi ETV documentary, “Return to the River,” which won a 1994 Emmy for Best Regional Documentary, and received the 2014 Faulkner-Wisdom gold medal for narrative non-fiction.
